The Eleventh Annual Undergraduate Physics Research Symposium was held on November 4, 2021 in the Rotunda Lower West Oval Room. Fifteen undergraduates gave oral presentations of their physics and astronomy-related research at the event, and a number of undergraduates presented posters.
Prizes were given to the best three presentations and posters. We would like to congratulate the following students for their outstanding performance:
Talks:
- 1st place: Theo O’Neall: Mappint the Local Bubble’s Magnetic Field in 3D
- 2nd place: Katya Mikhailova: Optical Cavity Design for Quantum Metrology
- 3rd place: Sydney Roberts: The Search for Hidden Structures in the Temple of Kukulcan at Chichen Itza using Cosmic-Ray Muons
Posters:
- 1st place: Sophia Yi: Atomic-scale Studies of the Dissociation of CO2 over Single Sn Atoms Dispersed on Au(111)
- 2nd place: Shrinichi Nadgouda: Constructing and Orthogonal Basis for Inage Reconstruction in MATLAB using Principle Component Analysis
- 3rd place: Darren Upton: Extraction of alphas using Bjorken Sums
We would like to give special thanks to our judges: Bob Jones, Shane Davis, Phil Arras, and Chris Jantzi. We also would like to thank the Physics and Astronomy Departments for support for prizes, and to Sigma Pi Sigma President Ethan McKeever, Vice Presidents Sophia Yi and Katya Mikhailova, and Social Chair Jason Boynewicz for their work in organizing this year’s highly competitive Symposium. We hope to see all returning students - as well as some new ones - next year!
